POLED: The new trend in Display tech?

Reputed leakster and tech aficionado Evan Blass (@evleaks) recently posted this picture on Twitter, saying that he thinks POLED (Plastic-OLED) will be the go-to tech to feature on smartphones in the future. This seems to be a future-proof technology, the one that can beat the current gen smartphones in the market, even the latest Galaxy S7 and LG G5.

LG had first announced in late 2013 that it had created new “Plastic-OLED” or “POLED” displays. Since then, details on the performance and development of the new displays have been very thin. Samsung followed suit by announcing that it was ready to showcase its new Flexible Plastic-OLED display.

Following all these announcements, there have been numerous renders year after year that have surfaced before this, perhaps even as a Samsung or an LG concept device itself. The picture shows a metal and glass combo construction, slimmer than an
average phone and going all out with curved screen panel, making it seem bezel-less. It all makes sense as reports claim that even Apple is said to be stepping into the OLED game, with possible release of devices sporting the displays as early as 2017.

While the LG G5 doesn’t have curved displays or edges like some of Samsung’s offerings and the G-Flex series seems to be in standby, LG is making serious progress in the flexible POLED field, in the background. Will this new innovation be able to match the far reaching benefits that an LCD can provide? Will LG deliver it first, or will Samsung? Only time will tell!
