Chinese spaceflight capsule Shenzhou-12 transports it’s first crew to the Chinese Space Station

China has launched three astronauts into orbit to begin occupation of the country’s new space station. The three men – Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo – are to spend three months aboard the Tianhe module some 380km (236 miles) above the Earth. It will be China’s longest crewed space mission to date and the first in nearly five years. The crew successfully docked with the space station just over seven hours after the launch. The moment of contact was met with applause from mission control in China. Their Shenzhou-12 capsule took off atop its Long March 2F rocket…

Standord University researchers make a breakthrough in ultrathin flexible electronics, could have a very promising future!

The long-sought future of flexible electronics that are wearable has proven elusive, but Stanford researchers say they have made a breakthrough. Ultrathin, flexible computer circuits have been an engineering goal for years, but technical hurdles have prevented the degree of miniaturization necessary to achieve high performance. Now, researchers at Stanford University have invented a manufacturing technique that yields flexible, atomically thin transistors less than 100 nanometers in length – several times smaller than previously possible. The technique is detailed in a paper published today (June 17, 2021) in Nature Electronics. With the advance, said the researchers, so-called “flextronics” move closer…

Elon Musk’s Starlink dishes go into “thermal shutdown” for 7 hours after hitting 122°F (50°C), to be replaced by 2nd dishes

With the summer mercury rising, users of Space Exploration Technologies Corp.’s (SpaceX) Starlink satellite-based internet constellation are also facing the heat. Users in Nevada and Arizona are reporting temperatures as high as 122°F and witnessing their satellite dishes shutting down as a result. Starlink representatives have also confirmed that the dishes cannot operate at 122°F, which makes us ponder whether a new dish currently waiting for the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) approval is a solution to these problems due to its lower transmit power. Unfortunately, a Starlink beta user in Arizona said he lost Internet service for over seven hours…

A New Era of Spaceflight? Exciting Advances in Rocket Propulsion

he US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) has recently commissioned three private companies, Blue Origin, Lockheed Martin and General Atomics, to develop nuclear fission thermal rockets for use in lunar orbit. Such a development, if flown, could usher in a new era of spaceflight. That said, it is only one of several exciting avenues in rocket propulsion. Here are some others. Chemical rockets The standard means of propulsion for spacecraft uses chemical rockets. There are two main types: solid-fueled (such as the solid rocket boosters on the Space Shuttle), and liquid-fueled (such as the Saturn V). In both cases, a chemical…
