    New Releases

Samsung is working on a chip to beat A14 Bionic’s GPU scores using an AMD GPU, could be released in the next 6 months

Samsung recently launched their latest phones in the Galaxy S21 lineup which includes the S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra, with either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC (System on a Chip) for the US/China/Korea market or Samsung’s home-grown Exynos 2100 SoC for the rest of the world. While Samsung made huge improvements over the Exynos 990 with their Exynos 2100, They are on par with the Snapdragon 888 in raw CPU power, and  are lagging behind in raw GPU power by a large margin. But they want to fix that, and push even further and compete with Apple’s A14 Bionic which…

Samsung is taking the fight to TSMC in the fab industry, to mass produce 3nm fabs at extended Texas plant

With Samsung’s 5nm extreme ultraviolet lithography (also known as EUV or EUVL) chip production currently underway, the Korean giant will want to level up with TSMC using an advanced manufacturing process. The company is reported to skip the 4nm node altogether and directly jump from 5nm to 3nm. However, to bring its plan to fruition, some serious investment is needed. It turns out Samsung may already be eyeing that; in the form of a $10 billion chip development facility in Austin, Texas. South Korean technology multinational, Samsung has decided to spend over $10 billion to construct an advanced new logic…

    Mediatek

The new Mediatek flagship 5G chips will give the snapdragon 888 and 870 a run for their money

Mediatek had recently announced it’s new Dimensity chipsets. The first one is Dimensity 1100 and the other is Dimensity 1200. Both chipsets come with quad ARM Cortex A78 extreme performance cores and quad ARM Cortex A55 efficiency cores. But they have different core configurations. They will be listed further on. The new chipsets are fabricated on TSMC’s 6nm process. If you had to choose between the new Snapdragon 870 and the Dimenity 1100 and 1200 series, I would prefer the Mediatek chips instead as the Snapdragon 870 still uses the old A77 cores.   Let’s take a look at how…

    LG

A sad day for the smartphone industry as LG, one of the innovators in smartphone tech is closing it’s smartphone business

LG has always been an innovator in the smartphone market by introducing some wacky ideas. From swivel devices like last year’s LG Wing to modular phones like the LG G5, the Korean company has always liked to do things differently. Example: at CES 2021, LG introduced a rollable phone that impressed us in every way. Unfortunately, LG’s rollable phone might be its final innovative phone in the smartphone space as the company is considering exiting the market entirely. LG’s footprint in the smartphone market has been chipped away at for years, but next year the company actually calls it quits.…

    Qualcomm

The Snapdragon 870 is released. But it’s just a higher clocked Snapdragon 865+

Qualcomm and TSMC tried really hard to squeeze out as much as they could from the 7nm process node. They seem to have succeeded so far. The Snapdragon 870 is basically a rebranded 865 with higher clocks. No design changes, no new processors, just a higher single core clock of their main core compared to their older flagship, 865+. Basically, this would be termed as an 865++ just like Intel’s 14nm+++ Snapdragon 870 is just a rebranded 865+ The main core is clocked at 3.2GHz which makes a 3% improvement compared to the older 865+. Unfortunately, Qualcomm doesn’t say anything…
