SpaceX Launches 2,500th Starlink Satellite in Third Back-to-Back Mission
Lead Image: At 5:42 a.m. EDT Friday, June 29, 2018, SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft lifts off on a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Dragon is carrying more than 5,900 pounds of research, equipment, cargo and supplies that will support dozens of scientific investigations aboard the International Space Station. NASA astronauts Ricky Arnold and Drew Feustel will use the space station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture Dragon when it arrives at the station on Monday, July 2. Rikhter R-23: The cannon the Soviet Union sent into space
Lead Image: The world’s first manned space rocket at an exhibition in Moscow city, Russia. Image Credit: Armastas/iStock In the mid-1970s, the Soviet Union became the first, and to date, only nation, to have actually fired a cannon in space. Mounted on a space station, the actual details of the endeavor have remained secret for over forty years until now. Let’s take a look at this historic event. Did the Soviets really install a working cannon on a space station? In short, yes they did. Called the R-23M, the cannon was installed and tested on the Almaz space station in the 1970s.…

Cellular Dynamics: First Panoramic Spatial Atlases of Life
The SpatioTemporal Omics Consortium (STOC) is a collaborative research initiative that aims to accelerate our understanding of cellular complexity and interactions at tissue scale in development, physiology, and disease through large-scale spatially resolved multiomics analyses. International scientific consortium, the SpatioTemporal Omics Consortium (STOC), produces the first spatiotemporal maps of cellular dynamics in mice, Drosophila, zebrafish, and Arabidopsis, using BGI-Research’s world-leading Stereo-seq technology. An international team of scientists led by China’s BGI-Research published state-of-the-art panoramic spatial atlases of life, examining the cellular dynamics of organisms at different developmental stages and providing potentially significant new information for disease treatment, development, and aging,…

“Dark Stars” – A Brief History of Black Holes
Artist’s concept illustration of a supermassive black hole emitting an x-ray jet. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Late in 2018, the gravitational wave observatory, LIGO, announced that they had detected the most distant and massive source of ripples of spacetime ever monitored: gravitational waves triggered by pairs of black holes colliding in deep space. Only since 2015 have we been able to observe these invisible astronomical bodies, which at that time could be detected only by their gravitational attraction. Then in a breakthrough in 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope captured an image of a black hole and its shadow for the first time.…
