VoNR: Oppo partners with Ericsson & Mediatek

Oppo conducts the first VoNR call in partnership with Ericsson and Mediatek

The Fifth Generation of mobile networks, aka 5G is the way forward in 2020 and beyond for communication, be it human to human, or machine to machine. It’s the latest way for the world and people to connect. It’s the global wireless standard that comes after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G. 5G enables a new kind of network that literally connects virtually everyone and everything together including machines, objects, and devices. VoNR makes calling on the 5G network much easier, and has improved calling over VoLTE

How does 5G improve our lives?

The 5G wireless tech delivers a very high, multi gigabit data speeds, with ultra low latency for instant communication on voice as well as data, and instant communication between 2 machines. It’s also more reliable than previous generations, has a much more massive network capacity(compared to 4G), increased availability to all the users, and a uniform user experience.

What is VoNR?

Similar to 4G, 5G too is mostly data driven. But they also have to consider the voice aspect of 5G, and that’s where Vo5G or VoNR comes into place. For 4G, they used VoLTE which stands for Voice over LTE or Long Term Evolution(a name they issued for 4G networks), and the new name for 5G networks is NR or New Radio. So VoNR is Voice over New Radio.

Oppo Ericsson partnership

Oppo collab with Ericsson and Mediatek:

Today, the 8th of April 2020, three main firms collaborated to make giant leap in the direction of the next-gen connectivity. Oppo introduced in a press launch that it has carried out a VoNR call on  one of its personal modified smartphones with a Mediatek Dimensity 1000L chipset over a 5G SA(Stand Alone) community surroundings, given by Ericsson.

Outcome of the experiment:

VoNR had shown to considerably offer a decrease in latency, improved sound quality and image quality, which ultimately resulted in “an elevated general expertise for customers”. Andy Wu, VP and President of Software Engineering Business Unit at Oppo stated the firm “proactively works to speed up large-scale commercialization of 5G”.

5G SA and NSA networks:

The experiment was conducted on SA or standalone networks. Standalone network is one created for 5G and it differs from the non standalone one. The non standalone or NSA network is using 5G antennae on existing 4G masts. This means, NSA networks use the existing 4G infrastructure for powering it’s network.

Other Notes:

The experiment was carried out at Ericsson’s HQ, based mostly in Stockholm, Sweden. The phones on each side of the call related nearly immediately “and then seamlessly switched to a high-definition video call with just a single keypress”, the press launch added.
