In an industry where all phones have started to blend together, especially when it comes to specifications, LG has come up with an interesting new series. The newly announced X series will make its debut at the MWC and what sets it apart is that each phone in the series offers one premium feature at the price of a mid-range phone.
The first two phones in this series are the X cam and the X screen and yep, the name says it all. The phones in this series are for people looking for a phone which has that one feature that they really want and don’t want to pay more for all the other ones that accompany it.
The X cam comes with two cameras at the back, a 13 MP one and a 5 MP one, though we don’t really know what this unique configuration will do to the photos people take. Weighing 118g and with a thickness of 5.2 mm, bulk clearly isn’t going to be a problem. Sporting an 8 MP front camera, it has a 5.2 inches screen powered by an 1.14 GHz octa-core processor and 2 GB RAM with 16 GB of internal storage and a battery capacity of 2,520 mAh. It will launch with Android Marshmallow.
The X screen comes with the “always on” secondary display that was unique to the LG V10. The 1.76 inches secondary screen is right above the main 4.93 inches display and lets you not only get information at a glance, it’ll also let you access notifications or perform few functions without interrupting whatever activity you’re engaged with on the main screen. At least, that’s how it should work in theory. Powered by an 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, this one has the traditional mid-range camera setup of a 13 MP primary camera and an 8 MP secondary camera. With 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage, it has a slightly larger battery than the X cam at 2,300 mAh. It too runs Marshmallow out of the box and this is something we appreciate about LG.
The X series will first launch in Asia, Europe and Latin America in March though you will be seeing them at Barcelona in a week. While prioritising one feature over making a cohesive whole isn’t something I appreciate, I’m just glad customers have more choice which is what Android has always been about. So if you wanted two cameras on the back or two screens on the front, LG has got you covered. I’m more interested in what the other products in the X series will bring. X battery, anyone?
